It was the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, who first raised concern over the state of health of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) when he emerged as the presidential candidate of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari, back then, needed to travel to London, United Kingdom for routine medical checkup.

Fayose, even, hinted at the possibility of the presidential hopeful been terminally ill.

The Ekiti State Governor of Ekiti State came under serious attack following an advertisement he placed in the Punch and Sun newspapers showing Nigeria's past leaders comprising Late Gen. Sani Abacha, Murtala Muhammed, former President Musa Yar'Adua and the photograph of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari with a question mark on his image.

Underneath the advert was the caption “will you allow history to repeat itself?” and “Enough of state burials! Nigerians, Vote Wisely: Vote Goodluck Jonathan. Northern Presidency should wait until 2019.”

It was believed that the advert campaign was a delicate indirect attack on Buhari's health.

Back then, Gen. Buhari in a swift reaction to the publication, issued a statement on his Facebook page, saying: “He put three former Heads of State who are Muslims and Northerners together in images and suggested that what happened to them may happen to Muhammadu Buhari. First, it is totally unprofessional and abusive to Ethical codes of Journalism for Punch and Sun Newspapers to publish such content. Punch and Sun Newspapers must revoke the advert immediately and apologize to the people of Nigeria, Buhari and the APC for such folly. Second, If till now, there is no denouncement of the post from PDP and GEJ it means that they support it because Fayose is a stakeholder of the party, and a front man for GEJ's campaign. GEJ signed a peace pact last week against election violence and he, through the insensitivity of this advert, is the first to break that pact. The Jonathan administration is cruising on lies and propaganda. It is bent on amassing votes to siphon more public funds and has no interest of Nigerians at heart. It is bound to fail. We are for peace. Make sure to get your PVC and vote these bigots out of power come February 14. Encourage your neighbors, let them know that GEJ has nothing to offer them but lies and empty promises. Let us channel our frustration to the goodwill of this Nation. Peace. Nigeria. Peace.”

Also, the Presidential Campaign Organisation of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statement issued in Abuja on January 16, debunked rumours over the alleged failing health of their presidential candidate, General Buhari (rtd).

Buhari went ahead to contest the election and recorded a major upset in the process, he unseated an incumbent president!

However, barely 23months and two trips to hospitals in the United kingdom, the talk of Buhari’s health remains a hot topic, perhaps, ahead other major challenges plaguing the Nigerian polity, such as: corruption, miscarriage of justice, insurgence, pipeline vandalism, election malpractices, incessant harassments from security agencies, ailing economy, poverty, unemployment and dilapidated infrastructure.

Last Friday was the second time Buhari would be conspicuously absent from Juma’at since his return from the second medical vacation in London, United Kingdom.

Buhari failed to participate in the usual Friday Juma’at prayer session in the State House Mosque located in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The prayer session was attended by Governors Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Abdullaziz Yari (Zamfara) and Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun).

Earlier, Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, had informed Nigerians that the president has decided to work from home, when trying to explain the reason for Buhari’s absence at the regular Wednesday meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC)

But the aides of the president have been attempting to calm apprehensive Nigerians.

There is no cause for alarm over President Muhammadu Buhari’s health and recovery, the Presidency said.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, gave the assurance in a reaction to speculations on the President’s health.

He said Buhari’s absence at the Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) was a last-minute decision; otherwise, the cabinet and the public might have been alerted in advance.

Shehu said in a statement: “As eager as he is to be up and about, the President’s doctors have advised on his taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment in the United Kingdom some weeks ago.

“President Buhari himself, on his return to the country, made Nigerians aware of the state of his health while he was in London. Full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation, as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, intimated in his press briefing after the FEC meeting on Wednesday.

“Despite his lack of visibility, Nigerians should be rest assured that President Buhari has not abdicated his role as Commander-in-Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces.

“He receives daily briefings on the activities of government, and confers regularly with his Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

“His private residence, where he has been spending the majority of his time recently, has a fully equipped office.”

The chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has even urged the President to hand over power to Vice President Yemi Osibanjo pending his full recovery from his undisclosed illness.

But, the Presidency said there was no cause for alarm.

Makarfi, who made the call in an interview with journalists in Abuja, said “if President Buhari is not fit enough to remain in office, it’s better to tell the Nigerian people and allow the Vice President to continue as Acting President and return to work after full recovery.”

Not satisfied with the secrecy surrounding the state of Buhari’s health, the Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, on Friday asked the President to reveal his health status to Nigerians.

Soyinka, who said this while speaking to journalists in Lagos, also stated that the current speculations about the President’s health were “unnecessary.”

Soyinka, while insisting on the disclosure of Buhari’s health status, wondered: “Why is the President hiding his state of health? He’s supposed to understand he’s public property. Me, I’m still private property, that’s why I’m not in Aso Rock.

“Once you are in Aso Rock or you occupy a similar position, you have a responsibility to come out frankly to your citizens.

“Guarding your state of health, like Donald Trump is guarding his tax returns, is not what we expect from a Nigerian President.

“Let him address the nation and stop all these speculations, which create unnecessary political manipulations, among other things,” he said.

Aides to the President have also ruled out the possibility of Buhari resigning his position over his ill health as being suggested by some Nigerians.

In an interview with journalists in Lagos on Friday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said those calling for the President’s resignation were merely expressing their opinion.

According to him, the views of over 15 million Nigerians that voted for the President were more important than such opinions, while expressing confidence that God would fully restore Buhari’s health.

Adesina, however, expressed confidence that through prayers of Nigerians, God would fully restore Buhari’s health.

He said, “There is no need for apprehension. God spared the president. In the first place, he said he had never been as sick as he was before, the same God that spared him will also ensure that he returns to full health. Nigerians prayed, God answered. Nigerians are still praying, God will still answer. That is all we believe.”
