At The Wedding
At The Wedding

About 35 private jets and four police/air force aircraft landed in Minna, on Friday, while the police provided air surveillance and tight security in the city.

At least, since the Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, better known as IBB, quit office in 1993, never has such number of guests gathered all at once to see him.

The occasion was the wedding ceremony of the general’s daughter, Halima and businessman, Auwal Abdullahi.

The Hilltop Mansion was reported to have received not less than 1000 dignitaries. And the reason is simple, IBB is one of the most important Nigerians in existence.

He is one of the very few one can truly call Nigeria’s politics ‘Godfather’.Since he ‘stepped aside’ in late 1993, no major event has passed in the country without his hand ‘deep’ in it.

When, his once close companion, Gen. Sanni Abacha, died in 1998, he made sure that his present right-hand man, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar became the Head of State.

He ensured the return of power in the country from military rule to democratic government. He saw to it that, his senior colleague in the military, a former Head of State, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo – who had relinquished power in the same manner in 1979 – got returned as civilian president in this present political dispensation.

The relationship between the two suffered serious setback for a while, because, Obasanjo refused IBB access to the Aso Rock Abuja- the country’s seat of power, in 2007.

Obasanjo, also, ignored his Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and passed the baton to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who later died in office.

The vulture is a patient bird, when Obasanjo ran into trouble with the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who succeeded Yar’ Adua, he was forced to run back to IBB, who with the help of some others, effected deftly the defeat of Jonathan in the 2015 Presidential Election.

The wedding of Halima came up at the right time, because it gave IBB the opportunity to showcase his influence.

Perhaps, as a prelude to it, IBB, Obasanjo and Abubakar Abdusalami had met at the Hilltop mansion for three hours and the meeting was believed to have dwelt on the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The generals were said to have considered all constitutional options available for the country in the face of the inability of Buhari “to effectively function” as president.

Before the meeting, Buhari had been indisposed in the last couple of weeks and unable to attend two jumat services at the mosque within Aso Rock.

He had also been unable to preside over two Federal Executive Council meetings.

According to a source privy to the closed-door meeting, the trio agreed to “continue to closely watch the situation” and “will speak out” at the appropriate time.

Obasanjo had secretly entered Minna the previous evening and was received by Governor Abubakar Bello who drove him to the uphill residence of Gen. Babangida.

A source said Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar was already waiting in IBB’s residence by the time Obasanjo arrived. All the domestic and security staff of IBB were asked to excuse the generals as they went into the almost three-hour meeting.

Niger State Governor Abubakar Bello was said to have also waited in one of the sitting rooms for the period the meeting lasted.

Bello was reported to have also driven Obasanjo to the airport after the clandestine meeting.

The generals’ meeting resonated far and wide because activities in Aso Rock took an upward swing, Buhari was promptly produced the following Friday and was eventually flown back to London, United Kingdom for more treatment.

The wedding of Halima, the last child of the family, was another political forum.

It gave the political class the opportunity to rebond.

The wedding saw former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Dame Patience, leading A-list guests that also included former military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar and his wife, Fati Lami, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former vice-president Namadi Sambo.

Other dignitaries were Gen. Aliyu Gusau, who served several times as National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, Professor Jubril Aminu, Mohammed Abacha, former senate president Anyim Pius Anyim and Dr. Ekwesileze Nwodo.

Some of the business moguls in attendance were Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu, Tunde Folawiyo and Bola Shagaya.

Sen Aliyu Wamakko, Mrs Aikhomu, and Mrs Josephine Anenih were among the many personalities who witnessed the short ceremony at the Hilltop home of the retired military General in Minna, the Niger State capital.

Others in attendance were Justice Idris Kutigi, former Chief Justice of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Yayale, also a former SGF, Gen. Magoro, Senator Ben Obi, Senator Ben Bruce, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Haruna, Chairman IBB Golf Club, Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura.

Former FCT Minister, Oba Hamid Adekunle, Oluwo Kuta, also came.

Others were Air Marshall Hamza Abdullahi, Gen Garba Duba, Sen Yarima Abdullahi, Sen Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sen Nuhu Aliyu, who was also a former police DIG.

Members of the Federal Executive Councils including Ministers of Interior Abdulrahman Danbazzau and Defence Mansur Dan-Ali as well as Minister of state for Solid Mineral Development Abubakar Bwari.

Abdullahi, the groom, who is  the Sarkin Sudan of Gombe, in Gombe state, gave 10 cows and N500,000 as dowry for his bride.

Gen. Garba Wushishi performed the symbolic ceremony of handing over Halimat at 2.45 pm in marriage to Abdullahi.

Gov. Ibrahim Dankwanbo of Gombe state received the bride on behalf of the groom, who hails from the state.

A special prayer by Sheik Kabiru Gombe was offered for the couple, he stressed the significance of marriage in Islam and called on the bride to submissive and loyal to her husband.

The wedding ceremony scheduled for 11.30 a.m was held after 2.45pm.

What the future holds in store, may be difficult to discern for now, but the fact remains that IBB will be around and very active in the country’s political landscape for some time to come.
