At this moment, a coup d’etat is an ill wind that will blow Nigeria no good, but it seems the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is begging for one.

For reasons yet to be fully grasped, the party’s leaders have been heating up the polity unnecessarily, harassing opponents and top citizens deemed foes in the country by using the state security apparatus, mostly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Service (DSS).

In an unprecedented twist of event, the APC has moved aggressively against top chiefs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), victimizing them incessantly.

Not done, the party raided, arrested and arraigned top judges/justices in the country, simply because they do not play ball.

The party is, also, waging war against top business interests, trying to cripple their businesses ahead the 2019 elections; the breaking of the hold of Intels over logistics handling in Nigeria’s oil and gas port terminals was seen as a move by power brokers to break the financial muscle of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, in the run up to the 2019 presidential election, same is, the ongoing ordeal of the chairman, Capital Oil and Gas Ltd, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah.

Not helping the matters is the raging battle between the party leadership itself, as reflected in the ongoing struggle between the Presidency and the House of Senate.

And, what has worsened the party’s fortunes is the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari, this has unsettled the state of affairs in the country’s seat of power, the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. There is apparent disaffection and distrust allover. Not only among the staff but also across geo-political zones, especially, from the north where Buhari comes from.

There is so much secrecy surrounding the true nature of the president’s health, a situation that has pitched desperate politicians into serious calculations as to whom will emerge as Vice President to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo should the unexpected happened.

Worse of all has been the APC government’s handling of the economy. The party which rode on the back of its ‘change’ mantra to win the 2015 Presidential election, has floundered seriously in the area of economy management.

It turned out that the country fared better economically under the administration of thieving Goodluck Jonathan.

It was not much of a surprise when the fear of the unwanted was disclosed by the Chief of Army staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, recently.

Buratai had warned politicians to stop covertly inviting the military to takeover government in Nigeria.

Reports indicated that some eminent Nigerians are trying to lure the military to intervene and seize power to ensure that power remains in the North, in the event of the demise of the incumbent President, who is critically ill and receiving treatment in London.

Buratai issued the warning in a statement released by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier Sani Usman.

“This is to inform the public that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General T.Y. Buratai,  has  received information that some individuals have been  approaching some officers and soldiers for undisclosed political reasons.”

He pointed out that on the basis of that, he has warned such persons to desist from these acts.

He added that Nigerian Army is a thorough professional, disciplined, loyal and apolitical institution that has clear Constitutional roles and responsibilities.”

Buratai advised all officers and soldiers interested in politics, to resign their commission or apply for voluntary discharge forthwith.

He warned that any officer or soldier of Nigerian Army found to be hobnobbing with such elements or engaged in unprofessional conducts such as politicking would have himself or herself to blame.

“The Nigerian Army will remain apolitical and respect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” The COAS reiterated.

As expected, Buratai’s revelation has generated reactions from all across the country.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) applauded the Chief of Army Staff for warning officers and men of the Nigerian Army to steer clear of politics.

The National Publicity Secretary of the group, Muhammad Ibrahim, said the warming was timely.

The forum’s spokesman urged Nigerians to expose those who wanted to turn the clock back.

ACF added, “Nigeria, at this time of our democratic experience, cannot afford any distractions by some unpatriotic individuals who want to use the military or other security agencies to disrupt our hard-earned democracy.

“The ACF therefore commends the Chief of Army Staff for his proactive action and appeals to Nigerians to expose those who wish to turn the hand of the clock backwards.”

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo asked Buratai to expose those that had approached soldiers for political reasons.

The group, however, warned against attempt, by anybody or group, to take advantage of President Muhammadu Buhari’s sickness “to take power through the back door.”

The Deputy Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mr. Chuks Ibegbu, said the nation deserved to know the individuals concerned.

“He (Buratai) should name those people, so that Nigerians will know who they are, and their motives.

“People should not take advantage of Mr. President’s health condition to take power through the back door.

“Whoever they are, they should know that any attempt to scuttle democracy in this country will be resisted by Nigerians. Military rule is no longer welcome in this country.

“But Buratai should start by naming these people; Nigerians need to know who they are so as to stop them.”

But the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere condemned the comment by Buratai on an alleged romance between the military and some soldiers, saying the comment had created fear in minds of Nigeria that coup might occur at any time.

The Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, stated that the COAS should not have made that statement but should have dealt with his men, who were found guilty of hobnobbing with politicians.

Odumakin stated, “The Chief of Army Staff should not have turned himself to a whistle-blower over the matter. He has a directorate of military intelligence, it should have found out those soldiers contacted and who are contacting them, not to be blowing whistle like the EFCC.

“It is very unfortunate that such a statement is coming out from the Chief of Army Staff. The statement has not only created fear but has also indicated that something can happen at any time.”

On the international front, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright, said the United Kingdom would continue to support democracy as the only system of government in Nigeria.

Arkwright further stated that anyone, who was seeking for change, must follow the democratic process which is election.

UK-based security analyst and counter-terrorism expert David Otto believes a coup could succeed only if Northerners were behind it, given the perception that top positions within the army are covered by people from northern Nigeria.

“If a coup were to occur in Nigeria, with the composition of the military, it will not be successful if a Southerner was behind it,” he told IBTimes UK.

“There could be genuine fear from the so called ‘Northern Cabal’ (elite from northern Nigeria) that what happened with the previous leader Yar'Adua could happen to President Buhari: Leaving Osibanjo, a Southern Christian, to take charge and maybe run in 2019.

“The fact that Buhari is out of the country indefinitely is not good for Nigeria stability. President Buhari must either return to Nigeria , disclose what's wrong with him or put the interests of the country [first] and resign as a result of his unfortunate ill health,” Otto concluded.

Although the Nigerian Army said it was yet to make any arrests, a report by Transparency International (TI) that the Nigerian defence and security sector is steeped in corruption, revealing that over N4.6 trillion ($15 billion) allocated to the sector in five years was either embezzled or unaccounted for, is, presently, generating its own heat across the country.
